Steve Throop, Partner

Steve Throop joined Hutchinson and Bloodgood LLP in January 2001, with the firm's merger with Logan Throop & Co., LLP. He is a graduate of The Pennsylvania State University. Prior to founding Logan Throop & Co., Steve worked in both audit and tax practices of large national and regional firms.

With a strong expertise in auditing, Steve enjoys summarizing complex data to make it understandable and useful. He has developed comprehensive forecasting models to allow clients to see their potential future financial statements and identify and change the driving factors to achieve a better future.

Steve provides his clients with a full range of tax and financial services and consulting. He deals with a wide variety of both established and emerging businesses and their owners. In addition, he works with employee benefit plans, and non-profit organizations to meet their compliance needs.

Steve is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the California Society of CPAs. He is a past President of the San Diego Chapter of the California Society of CPAs and has also served several terms on the State Council. He is also a member of the Corporate Finance Council of San Diego and has volunteered as a consultant to a high school class for Junior Achievement, and taught accounting in classes for entrepreneurs.

Steve moved to San Diego in the late 1970s after "two nasty winters in a row" in his native Pennsylvania. A career preference test taken in high school indicated a leaning toward accounting, and Steve decided on his career then and there. "Summarizing complex data has just always made sense to me," he explained.

When he discovered that his high school didn't offer accounting, he wrote to the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) for information. "They convinced me," Steve said. "I started college as an accounting major and never changed my mind." Based on his experience in several accounting firms, including international, national, regional, and local organizations, Steve believes what makes Hutchinson and Bloodgood LLP different is their determination to not take what he calls a "cookie-cutter approach."

"We take into account the client's goals, and whenever possible, we help them accomplish those goals using their working style, as long as it can be done within the rules," he said. "It all comes down to using good judgment, which is what the profession has always tried to do. We have to keep evaluating what information is significant."
